I’m an Accredited Mental Health Social Worker, Yoga Teacher and soon-to-be Naturopath.
My own journey led me to the helping profession through my own lived experience of trauma. This instilled in me, from a very young age, an empathetic awareness of the pain experienced by trauma survivors, and the effect that complex trauma and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) can have on all of us – not only on an individual level, but also as a community.
I feel privileged to support both individuals, and other Clinicians in the helping professions, in their own healing and self-care journey.
I incorporate body and breathwork (pranayama), in conjunction with traditional talk therapy, to provide a holistic and embodied approach to wellness and mental health care.
My name is Emily & this is my why —
The Journey to Moksha Holistic Counselling —
I left home when I was 17 years old to undertake academic studies in Criminology, Sociology, Psychology and Counselling at Monash University. In 2015, I completed my Master of Social Work at James Cook University. This eventually led me to obtain my Accreditation as a Mental Health Social Worker in 2021.
I connected deeply to Social Work due to its Social Justice framework, and I recognise that an individual or communities environment has the most substantial impact on overall health, wellbeing and development. More specifically, recognition of trauma and its impacts on an all aspects of our health - physical, emotional, psychological and spiritual.
Although Psychology and Social Work provided me with a strong foundation as a Mental Health Clinician, I felt that a more holistic approach was required - one that recognises the body-mind connection.
I travelled to India in 2016 to study Hatha Yoga and obtained my Level 1 Yoga Teacher Training accreditation, whilst living in an Ashram. Since this time, I have completed further yoga training in Yin Yoga and Trauma-Informed Yoga. I wholeheartedly believe yoga, meditation and pranayama can provide significant nervous system regulation tools to support our mental wellbeing. As a result, I often incorporate these modalities within therapy sessions.
Herbal medicine and nutrition have been fundamental in my own mental health care. I always wanted to study natural medicine, and in 2017 commenced my formal studies in Naturopathy.
Naturopathy and nutritional advice will be offered from 2025, once I’ve completed a Bachelor of Health Science (Naturopathy).
My aim is to provide a truely holistic approach to mental health care and an alternative for individuals not seeking treatment via the medical system route.
Moksha Holistic Counselling was created in 2022 to provide safe and accessible holistic healthcare. My hope is to collaboratively support individuals to achieve mental wellness by sharing tools and body-mind practices that support healing.
I am currently completing a Bachelor of Health Science (Naturopathy). Herbal medicine and nutrition prescriptions will be offered, in conjunction with talk therapy, from 2025.
This will provide an even more holistic and expansive individualised approach to mental health and trauma-based care.
Merging Clinical & Spirituality
In my work with people and communities, I’ve often found more was needed than just traditional talk therapy.
Yoga, meditation, nutrition and complementary medicines have formed an integral part of my own healing journey.
I started a dedicated yoga and meditation practice in my early 20’s in response to seeking more natural approaches to manage anxiety.
This eventually led me to Rishikesh, India in 2016 to complete my Yoga Teacher Training. I have subsequently completed further yoga studies in yin and trauma sensitive yoga.
Yoga training instilled my belief that - movement, meditation, breathwork and herbal medicine – can provide the optimal environment for trauma recovery and healing.
